CARNAC
What every button on the FM1 does, drawn in the screen's own runes and stones.
Most buttons open a page. Press the same button again for its next page. The letters below find each control on the drawing. THEME, top right, repaints this manual in any palette from GLOBAL > THEME.

THE ENCODERS
B C DSELECT, THEN ALGORITHM
- SELECT moves the lit row. Dim rows are skipped.
- ALGORITHM changes the lit row's value. While it turns, a large tablet shows the row and its value. The tablet goes away 1.5 s after you stop.
PRESETS LOADS WHAT THE PAGE IS ABOUT
Each click steps to the next saved slot and loads it at once. A list of names stays up 2 s after the last click.
While HOME is held PRESETS does nothing, so a slip of the hand loads nothing.
HOME
I- LAYER
- ZONES
- PERF
- GLOBAL
- BACK TO LAYER
A PERFORMANCE IS A DOLMEN
The capstone is the performance. It rests on four pillars: the two patches, the sequence and the arp. A pillar grows with how far its part is from the factory one. On a SINGL performance the layer 2 pillar lies in rubble.
HOLD HOME TO PICK THE LAYER
Hold HOME and this strip appears at the foot of the screen. OCT- picks layer 1, OCT+ layer 2. The picked layer's OCT button lights and the other one flashes. In DUAL the keys then play the picked layer. Used like this, HOME does not change the page when you let go.
SAVE
ITHREE MOVES
- Press SAVE. The save page opens on what the page you came from holds: a sound page the picked layer's PATCH, HOME the PERFORMANCE, SEQ the SEQUENCE, ARP the ARP.
- Turn ALGORITHM or knob 2 to choose the slot. Knobs 3 and 4 write the name on a keyboard of runes.
- Press SAVE again while it flashes. You go back to the page you came from.
READ THE MOON
The bank is a hill of slots, a mark for each one in use. The chosen slot is a stone. An empty slot saves at once. A used one asks first:
Turn ALGORITHM to YES and press SAVE.
COPY AND PASTE: HOLD SAVE
- Hold SAVE + OCT- to copy what SAVE would save here.
- Hold SAVE + OCT+ to paste it over the current one. The save page opens and asks PASTE? first.
128 patch slots. 32 each of performances, sequences and arps.
SEQ
I KOn the SEQ page the 16 white keys are the 16 steps of the lane on screen. Each step is a stone that grows with its value. Press SEQ again for the next lane.
EDIT STEPS
- Tap a white key: that step and the three after it go on knobs 1-4 (from 13 on, steps 13-16).
- The knobs set those steps: a note, or the lane's value.
- SELECT walks the steps four at a time, then the settings at the foot of the screen: scale, root, mode, target.
- The black keys are silent here.
LOOP AND RECORD
- Hold OCT- + a white key: the loop starts on that step.
- Hold OCT+ + a white key: the loop ends on that step.
- A tap of OCT- / OCT+ with no key still moves the octave.
- REC: step record. The keys play as usual and write into the record step. Hold keys together for a chord of up to 4 notes.
ARP
I KOn the ARP page the keyboard splits. The low 13 keys play chords. The white keys above are the pattern's 8 steps, and the black keys between them are switches.
CHORDS AND STEPS
- Hold a chord key to hear its chord arpeggiated. While the ARP plays, a chord key moves the pattern to its key.
- Hold a step key + a chord key: the chord goes into that step, with the four knob settings.
- Hold a step key + turn a knob: that step changes at once.
- Knobs: RATE, OCTAVE, STYLE, RHYTHM.
THE SWITCHES
PLAY, REC, OCTAVE
J EPLAY FOLLOWS THE PAGE
If one already plays, the other waits for its next bar, so the two stay in time.
REC RECORDS INTO THE PAGE
PLAY lights green while playing and red while recording.
A tap moves the keys down or up an octave, three each way. The button stays lit while you are off the middle octave, where the keys run F3 to G5.
LIGHTS AND HOLDS
ALL- The lit button is the page on screen. The rest stay dark.
- Green: playing. Red: recording.
- Flashing: a press of SAVE saves now.
- The moon on every page is the battery: new when empty, full when full, a ring of stars on USB power.
EVERY HOLD
After two failed starts the FM1 opens SAFE MODE: no sound, USB on, so the web installer still reaches it. PLAY tries again.
